Task2
In task1, I chose the art work I was most interested in, Van Gogh's Starry Night. In task2, I needed and made a visual analysis, and conceived three sketches from it.
Visual analysis
- work:
Title:Starry Night
Artist's/designer name:Van Gogh
Date:June 1889
Reference link:https://www.nbfox.com/the-starry-night/
- Observation
This work of art was created by the scenery that Van Gogh saw from the window of the ward when he was hospitalised in 1889, integrating his imagination and emotional expression. The work fully reflects Van Gogh's unique artistic style and skills, using dynamic lines to depict the starry sky and clouds, making the picture full of vitality. The swirling starry sky in the painting reflects Van Gogh's inner turmoil and uneasiness and his extreme loneliness and pain during his hospitalisation. The painting adopts a strong colour contrast, such as the dark blue night sky and the bright yellow stars and moon form a sharp contrast. This contrast enhances the visual impact of the picture and also conveys the emotional tension of Van Gogh.
- Analysis
During his stay in a mental institution, Van Gogh produced a work of art called The Starry Night, which shows his different artistic style and inner world. The shining stars and moon reflect his search for light and hope, while the whirling sky and strong brushstrokes convey his inner movement and anxiety. The building's spire might be referring to his thoughts on faith and religion, and the contrast between the deep blue night sky and the brilliant stars and moon increases the visual effect. The picture appears three-dimensional because to the distinct impression of depth created by the cypress tree in the front, the settlement in the center ground, and the starry sky in the backdrop.Van Gogh expresses his wonder at nature, his thoughts on life, and his need for a sense of belonging to himself by combining natural landscapes with his the inside feelings via extreme shapes, powerful brushstrokes, and lively colors.
- Interpretation
Van Gogh created "Starry Night" to express his inner turmoil, his awe of nature and the universe, his pursuit of light and hope, and to vent his loneliness and pain through art, showing his profound thinking about life and faith. The Starry Night is a lasting work in art history because it deeply reflects Van Gogh's feelings and soul in addition to nature.
Ideation
Ideation 1
I drew this picture inspired by the village below in the starry night, which contains the pursuit of a simple life.
Ideation 2
This image was inspired by the mountains on a starry night, expressing Van Gogh's desire for freedom during his hospital stay.
The church expresses Van Gogh's profound understanding of the universe and faith, and shows his exploration of the meaning of life.
