Task 1: ‘HUNTING' ON ARTLINE PEN
(WEEK1-WEEK3)
WEEK 1 (24/09/2025)
In this lesson, we will learn black and white illustration, and we will need to use a black pen with a diameter of 0.2-0.8. In this process, we will use slanted dotting techniques to depict figures and human proportions.
First, we need to find a picture on Pinterest that matches the requirements of the drawing we want to make and then print it out on A3 paper.
We need to practice drawing lines first to avoid making mistakes when drawing on the illustration board.
Below are the photos I selected.
Next, I practiced drawing lines in my sketchbook. I found the slanted dot technique very difficult; I had never drawn like that before. I practiced it three times, and Mr. Jr. was very satisfied with the last one.
Self-Reflection:
Today's study, I feel like I'm learning to draw again. I remember the first time I practiced on A3 paper; my hands were shaking. Just to draw a straight line, I tried repeatedly with several thick and thin brushes, for fear that if one point was not good, it would destroy the overall feeling. Especially when dealing with the proportion of characters, the position of each point is particularly important. If it is slightly skewed, the dynamics of the characters will become strange.
WEEK 2 (01/10/2025)
This week I started trying to draw figures in my exercise book.
This process was difficult because firstly, we had to draw black and white illustrations and handle the relationship between black, white, and gray tones very well. Secondly, we had to use a slanted dotting technique, which undoubtedly increased the difficulty.
I almost made several mistakes.
Self-Reflection:
This week, I began to draw complete characters in the exercise book, which felt much more difficult than simply practicing lines.
The biggest challenge is to deal with the relationship between black and white and gray. In the past, you only needed to consider the thickness and position of the line. Now you have to think about where you should leave white space and where you need to use dense dots to show shadows. Especially the faces and folds of the characters' clothes; if they are not handled well, the picture will look very flat and have no sense of three-dimensionality. However, it is not without progress. Through this week's practice, I slowly found the relationship between the sparseness and the lightness and darkness of the picture. Although the process is very hard, I still feel a sense of accomplishment when I see that the characters I draw gradually have a shape.
I know this is just the beginning. If you want to draw well, you need more patience and practice.
WEEK 3 (08/10/2025)
This week we need to complete Task 1, which requires drawing it on the illustration board. It wasn't so difficult after practicing in the exercise book.
I had finished most of the drawing at home before class and completed it during class. I handed it to Mr. Jr. for inspection, and he added some lines to the background in the blank areas to better highlight the three-dimensionality of the figure and emphasize its presence, creating a more visually impactful effect.
Task 1 was a novel challenge for me, requiring me to create a black and white illustration using a style I had never used before. Through this process, I learned to better handle the relationship between black, white, and gray tones in the image and how to emphasize the presence of the figures to create a more visually impactful effect.
Task 2: COLOR PENCIL
(WEEK 4-WEEK 6)
WEEK 4 (15/10/2025)
This week we're starting Task 2, which involves drawing with colored pencils using the scrubbing technique. The theme is spring and summer, and we need to find relevant photos on Pinterest to draw.
We need to explore character poses, body proportions, faces, and details to create the illustration; we can refer to magazines for inspiration.
I chose the illustration below to copy.
The biggest challenge is to deal with the fatigue and layering of colour. For example, the blue colour of the skirt needs to be repeatedly superimposed and rubbed with different shades of blue to draw the transparency and dynamism. In addition, the proportions of the faces and bodies of the characters also need to be portrayed very carefully. If you don't pay attention, you will lose your shape.
WEEK 5 (22/10/2025)
This week, continue drawing task 2.
The original image contains so many details that require careful observation. Furthermore, the difference between colored pencil colors and the image is not readily apparent to the naked eye. Therefore, it's best to test the colors on a practice sheet first and then gradually apply them by rubbing.
Self-Reflection:
I have been concentrating on this colored pencil illustration this week. Although the process is slow, every step gives me a deeper understanding of techniques and colors.
WEEK 6 (29/10/2025)
Final presentation:
I tried my best to recreate the effect in the picture. The skirt in the picture is entirely blue, so you need to pay attention to how it flares out; some overlapping parts need to be darkened.
The left side of the picture uses a red sticker to represent a flower; I used different shades of red to draw it.
The bottom hem of the skirt has some pleats, which I depicted using dark blue and purple.
Self-Reflection:
Task 2 requires drawing many details, and it requires layering colors with colored pencils to achieve the desired effect. I should be more patient with it.
Task 3: OVERLAPPING ON MARKER
(WEEK 7-WEEK 9)
WEEK 7 (05/11/2025)
This week we're starting Task 3, which requires us to find an illustration with the theme 'sports illustrated.'
Like task 1 and task 2.
Then Mr. Jr. explained to us how to draw. We need to select 3-4 gradient shades in cool gray tones and skin tones.
Self-Reflection:
In the seventh week of the practice of the marker color stacking technique, during the practice, I found that the intensity and speed of color stacking need to be precisely controlled. If the brush is too heavy, the color will be cloudy, and if it is too light, it will not cover. It takes a lot of practice to find the feel.
WEEK 8 (12/11/2025)
After selecting my photos last week, I started drawing this week.
WEEK 9 (19/11/2025)
Task 4: FINAL PROJECT- MIX MEDIA DRY & WET MEDIA
(WEEK 10-WEEK 14)
WEEK 10 (26/11/2025)
Start doing Task 4 this week.
Task 4 requires us to use AI to create a photo of ourselves wearing a kebaya with a model in the photo.
WEEK 11 (03/12/2025)
I plan to combine watercolor and colored pencils in my painting.
WEEK 12 (10/12/2025)
Last week I used watercolors to lay the base coat for my final piece; this week I'm going to use colored pencils to add the details.
